Tours from Vassbakken

Bird's nest

The hike to Fuglesteg is a classic. A 5-minute drive will take you up to the newly restored mountain farm Fuglesteg, which has panoramic views of Fortunsdalen and Skjolden. The last part of the hike is relatively steep, so remember to bring plenty of water.

Wittgenstein

Visit the site where the famous Austrian philosopher Wittgenstein lived for a time. In 1921, Wittgenstein published the book Tractatus Logico-Filosoficus , which is still considered one of the most important standard works in modern philosophy. He wrote parts of the book in his house in Skjolden.

The original plot is on a ledge in a steep mountain slope 30 meters above Eidsvatnet, a place called "little Austria" by those who live in the village, because of the famous philosopher.

Gjerseggi

On the mountainside above Vassbakken Kro og Camping lies the disused mountain farm Gjerseggi. From there you have a fantastic view of Fortunsdalen, with the Fortunselva river flowing through the valley right past Vassbakken. A fairly easy hike that takes 30–40 minutes to the top.

Åsafossen

Åsafossen waterfall cascades out of the mountainside directly opposite Vassbakken Kro og Camping. After Sherpas from Nepal have been there to prepare a path, it is now a short and easy hike up to the waterfall.
